The Fall into Paradise is part of a video commission for The Tristan Project, an opera remake by Peter Sellars based on Wagner’s 19th-century opera Tristan und Isolde. The full original piece runs approximately four hours. In this work, a single pixel of light emerges from the center of a black screen, gradually expanding until two lovers appear, embracing as they leap into water—an unseen realm beyond the surface. For Viola, true union can only be achieved by transcending physical life and the body, and this moment of transcendence is captured through a single sonic burst and a tumultuous visual of water.
